Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLBPT)

Before starting classes in the ELSA Program, you must take the CLBPT to find out

what level of English you are at.

This is a streamlined, STANDARDIZED TEST across Canada.

It is used to place adult learners in ESL programs.

It is task-based and assesses four language skills:

Speaking
Listening
Reading
Writing

The test is aligned with the CANADIAN LANGUAGE BENCHMARKS LEVELS 1-8

The test is approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes and you must book an appointment ahead of time.

If you are a Permanent Resident or Canadian Citizen and you plan to take part in the ELSA program, the test is free of charge.

Currently the CLBPT is available only to assessment centres and to all government-funded adult ESL programs throughout the country which meet the CLBPT policy requirements. In some regions, additional restrictions may apply. For more information on the CLBPT, go to www.language.ca
